TMJ CARE
Your initial evaluation is highly detailed and will include a small amount of treatment. This treatment is to better understand what techniques and direction will work best for you going forward. After the initial evaluation we meet 1-2 times a week for the first 3-4 weeks to get the ball rolling. Often we have to play catch-up on months or years of poor habits, tight muscles and other barriers to getting your relief so having this frequency at the start yields the most consistently favorable outcomes.

If your pain is worse during or after the workday then let’s take a look at your workspace. Often we find red flags and root cause issues in a patient’s workspace that lead to the pain we see in the clinic.

Why Choose a Certified Cervical & Temporomandibular Therapist
A CCTT has extensive knowledge and training in the craniomandibular region. Within the profession of Physical Therapy, there is currently a void that is specific to orofacial and temporomandibular pain/dysfunction syndromes. When you chose a PT with this focus, you are choosing to work with someone who represents a very small fraction of PT’s with advanced training and education in this area. CCTTs go through over 100 hours of post-graduate training in the areas of cervical spine, headache and TMJ disorders. They must also have at least 3 years of practice under their belt. They must also pass a rigorous examination to become certified by The Physical Therapy Board of Craniofacial & Cervical Therapeutics. There are currently under 15 CCTTs in Canada.
The Benefits of Manual Therapy
Manual therapy serves as a crucial means of healing by "opening a window" to relief and recovery. Our daily life and physical demands often press down on this window, attempting to close it and hinder progress. By engaging in manual therapy, we work to pry this window open, addressing the underlying issues in the head, neck, and jaw areas.
Your prescribed home exercises act as supportive "bricks," helping to keep the window ajar between sessions. This ongoing effort ensures that the therapeutic benefits of manual therapy are maintained and built upon. For lasting improvement, it's essential to lighten the load pressing on the window, thereby allowing for more effective and sustained relief. This collaborative approach between manual therapy and home exercises optimizes your recovery and promotes long-term well-being.
What Our
Patients Are Saying
I highly recommend Brett for physiotherapy for TMJ pain. During my 10 sessions with him I noticed a steady improvement and cessation of extreme pain. His various techniques including dry needling were very successful. Nightly exercises were assigned using a customized selection videos sent to my email and an app. Brett is personable, professional and an expert in his field, referred by Dr. Magalhaes of SHSC.

For no apparent reason, I started experiencing pain in my right jaw, making it hard to eat, or even open my mouth. My dentist's office suggested seeing Brett (and they later confirmed no 'dental' explanation for the pain). Over the course of a half dozen treatments, and dedication to the exercises Brett gave, normal function and feeling returned. He is easy-going and communicates clearly. I know I may need future care, if pain returns (just as with chiropractic, massage, etc.) but will certainly return to Brett.

I went in with tightness in my left jaw, only able to open my mouth half the usual range. Brett was confident and knowledgeable and explained the situation and the course of treatment to me right at the start and put my mind at ease. He approached the issue from several angles, using dry needling, chiropractic, massage and a range of exercises that I could do at home. After every visit I felt better and at this point the tightness is gone and I can open my mouth to my full range. He is supportive and easy to communicate with. I have already recommended his practice to a couple of people I know with similar issue.
